Anti-Oppression Workshop

Special SSDP2012 Conference Session

13th Annual SSDP Conference
March 25, 2012
9:00AM – 1:00PM
Full conference schedule here.

Full Description:
The four-hour anti-oppression workshop will focus on examining power and privilege by looking at the unique relationship between race and class in the US as it impacts all oppression. In developing common language and examining how racism is internalized by all people, we will be able to better understand the dominant culture's policies, laws, and institutions and our role in upholding or breaking down the oppressive construct.

SSDP members will be able to use this knowledge and expanded perspective to better understand how drug laws fit into the structures of power and privilege within society.

Presenter Bio:
Rachael Ibrahim, an anti-oppression community organizer, activist and trainer provides experiential and interactive workshops with an anti-racism lens. Trained by the People's Institute for Survival and Beyond through Undoing Racism and earning a Master's degree from The Hunter College School of Social Work in Community Organizing, Rachael brings a wealth of experience. From the International Solidarity work and anti-oppression trainings at OWS, to Youth Leadership Development (specifically in regards to the African Diaspora), organizing and providing training to New York Collective of Radical Educators and so much more, Rachael works with various communities to create sustainable change.

Application Process:
Because of the interactive aspect of this workshop, enrollment will be limited to approximately 30 students with the majority of spaces to be determined by random lottery. Students interested in attending should fill out the application below to be entered into the lottery for enrollment in the workshop. Students who are enrolled in the workshop must stay for the full four hours.

Students will be notified of their placement in the workshop or on the waiting list prior to the conference so you can arrange your schedules. In order to “diversify” the workshop, organizers will prioritize having representation from a range of chapters; therefore, if more than one student from the same chapter is selected in the lottery, only one student from that chapter will be offered enrollment in the workshop. The deadline for applications is Sunday, March 11th by midnight.

Students can fill out the application, below.

Outreach, Recruitment and Diversity Committee:
The Anti-Oppression Workshop is a product of the work of SSDP’s Outreach, Recruitment & Diversity committee. The committee was formed to address the challenge of strengthening the diversity within and all around SSDP. The war on drugs is primarily a war on people of color, especially young people of color. And the failure of past and present drug policies are most strongly felt by the people who are directly targeted by the enforcement of these laws. Therefore, it is crucial to have more people of color active in SSDP. Hosting the workshop at the Annual SSDP Conference is designed to prepare students to discuss and start to address issues of diversity within their own chapter and to help students reflect on the complex intersection of forms of oppression and the war on drugs.

Tell the Obama administration to stop the medical marijuana raids!

On April 2, 2012, federal agents led by the DEA conducted a raid on Oaksterdam University in Oakland, California, which has been in business legally under California state law since 2007. This is just the latest attack on medical marijuana by the Federal government, which astonishingly has conducted more raids of this kind than it did under George W. Bush's administration. Please ask your congressperson and your senators to urge President Obama to put an end to these heartless raids.
