SSDP Mexico students participate in International Forum!

By Fernando Thiríon

Speaking at the forum served as SSDP’s debut on the national policy stage, but also demonstrated to panelists, the public and the media that students and youth can serve as equals in the drug policy reform movement. It has shown that SSDP is a national player that should be invited to the table for debate and dialogue. In addition, the various SSDP chapters worked together as a team and grew much stronger as a positive consequence. We are proud of each other and look forward to creating a stronger student movement in Mexico!

by Graham de Barra, SSDP Ireland

I sat in anticipation as Mike called out those elected and I was shocked to hear, “Graham from Ireland, err, I can’t pronounce his surname”. I was never so happy to hear someone struggle with my Irish surname and I was welcomed on stage by the new board in which I would be working with.

The Commission on Narcotic Drugs meeting

Last week, SSDP made its grand debut at the Commission on Narcotic Drugs meeting in Vienna, Austria. This wasn’t the first time that SSDP had participated in the proceedings (many NGO representatives remembered Kris Krane’s much-lauded intervention in the “Beyond 2008” discussions), however it was the first time that SSDP arrived bearing Special Consultative Status from the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.

At conferences and forums around the world, the Portugal model of drug policy is lauded by academics, politicians and service providers and highlighted as an example of effective policy-making. Ten years after decriminalizing personal use and possession of drugs and moving drug policy from being a law enforcement issue to one of public health, the results have been dramatic. The future of this policy now hangs in the balance due to austerity measures in Portugal. Without proper funding, this internationally recognized model will be distorted or discontinued.

Survey on Insecurity and Drug Policy in Mexico

In late November 2011, the results from the 9th survey on Mexican Citizens Perceptions of Insecurity was released. This survey is conducted by Mitofsky Consulting, a U.S. based firm, and highlighted a series of questions regarding how to combat organized crime and the so-called war on drugs.
