Opiates; Morphine and Heroin

Opiates are a class of depressant analgesics that are derived from or chemically similar to substances found in the opium poppy. These include opium, morphine, and heroin.

The term includes both naturally occurring and synthetic substances.

According to dictionary.com, opiates are any number of "various sedative narcotics containing opium or one or more of its natural or synthetic derivatives."

One of the most influential men to fight against opiates in the United States was Harry J. Anslinger, who built the Federal Bureau of Narcotics upon his stance against opiates, cocaine, and marijuana.
