As those of you who participated in our Schooling Congress on Drug Policy week of action know, the United States House of Representatives is expected to vote on the Marijuana Opportunity, Reinvestment, and Expungement (MORE) Act the week of September 21st. The MORE Act is a comprehensive bill to end federal marijuana prohibition, expunge federal marijuana convictions, and create programs and funding to repair the social and economic harms caused by decades of disproportionate enforcement of marijuana in communities of color and poor white communities.

Key attributes of this bill include:

  • Ending the federal criminalization of marijuana by removing it from the Controlled Substances Act
  • Preventing the government from denying an individual federal benefits, student financial aid, or security clearances needed to obtain government jobs because of marijuana use
  • Providing opportunity for those convicted under marijuana laws to petition for resentencing and expungement
  • Ordering the expungement of each conviction and juvenile adjudication for a cannabis offense, retroactive to the effective date of the Controlled Substances Act (May 1, 1971)
  • Additional details about the MORE Act can be found here [link to SSDP’s MORE Act one pager]
If we are able to pass the MORE Act in the House this month, we will show the Senate and those running for President the power and influence of the drug policy reform movement. Do not wait to contact your House Representative to voice your support. Use our campaign link to email, tweet, and call your representative and get the MORE Act passed!
