Applications to run for student director seats on our Board of Directors are due this Sunday, February 17th, at 11:59pm PST. Now is your chance to play a critical role in the everyday functionality of SSDP – from fundraising to organizational goal setting and everything in between.
Our student Congress which, among other things, elects student directors, will take place at SSDP2019: The Global Students for Sensible Drug Policy Conference in Chicago from March 29th – 31st, in two sessions, one on Friday 3/29 and one Saturday 3/30. Then, the newly elected board members will be announced at Saturday evening’s award ceremony. Details of the Congress process will be discussed with candidates during the Congress 101 webinar (date TBD). Candidates will also be matched with a board mentor for the duration of their application process.
Serving on SSDP’s board is both a challenge and an honor. Understanding the nuances of running an active and vibrant international non-profit gives you experience virtually unmatched for someone still in school. Here’s what a few current and former board members have to say about their experience:
“My work on the Board of SSDP connected me with leaders in every facet of my community, and taught me how to make use of my own tools and lived experience in a professional and academic setting.” – Katie Stone ‘09, Board Member 2016-2018
“Being a part of the BoD has given me the confidence to succeed in professional settings, has greatly reduced my anxiety to call people, has inspired me to be the best version of myself, not only for me, but for the entire integrity of the organization, and has widely developed my networking community.” – Samantha Melius ‘15, Board Member 2018-2019
“Serving on SSDP’s Board of Directors gave me tons of insight into nonprofit management. Nothing prepared me more to work for Colorado’s largest nonprofit serving people who inject drugs (my dream job in drug policy reform) than my experiences with SSDP.” – Kat Humphries ‘10, Board Member 2013-2014
“When I was elected to SSDP’s board in 2013, my idea for what a Board member does was vastly different than what the role actually turned out to be. As a result, I found myself a bit out of comfort zone. But, in a good way! Because of the turbulence the organization was experiencing at the time, I was fortunate to learn an incredible amount about organizational governance, fundraising, and staff oversight over a very short period of time.” -Scott Cecil ‘10, Board Member 2013-2014
