It’s been a great week for SSDP, as we are fortunate to welcome another newly established chapter to the network, Northern Kentucky University. Chapter leader Dylan Birkenhauer spoke with me about his experience starting a new chapter, and his plans moving forward.
How did you hear about SSDP?
I first heard about SSDP through Marijuana Policy Project’s website.
Why did you want to get involved/what made you decide to start a chapter?
I wanted to get involved so that I could be a part of making a difference on issues such as the legalization of cannabis, enacting Good Samaritan Policies and several other important efforts.
What has the reception been like on campus? From students, teachers, administration, etc.
It has been very welcoming and contrary to what I would’ve initially expected.
What are some of the things you have planned or want to plan for next semester?
I want to enact a Good Samaritan Policy on campus and do everything possible to help with cannabis legalization efforts.
What is the most challenging part of your experience starting/running the chapter so far?
Getting everything started at first is the most difficult.
What is the most rewarding part?
Knowing that I’m making a positive difference.
What are you most excited about for your chapter policy right now?
Cannabis legalization efforts have made huge steps in the last few years and I am eager to help this become a growing trend nationwide.
What is your vision for Northern Kentucky University SSDP? Where do you see your chapter in a year? in 4 or 5 years?
I would like to see us get a Good Samaritan Law passed on campus and do my part to work toward cannabis legalization on a state and federal level.
