SSDP & The Shulgin Foundation Webinar Series Kicks Off May 27

Join SSDP for a collaborative educational webinar series with the Shulgin Foundation highlighting the intersection of chemical innovation, research value, cognitive liberty, and drug policy reform.

The series kicks off with a webinar entitled, “You’ve Gotta Fight for Your Right to Research (Chemicals): The Battle to Stop the DEA Scheduling of DOI and DOC. A Webinar on the Future of Psychedelic Research taking place on May 27, 2-3:30 PM ET.

The Battle for Scientific Freedom is Happening Now

A landmark legal challenge is unfolding that could dramatically impact the future of psychedelic research. For the first time since the mid-1980s, scientists and advocates are formally challenging the DEA’s attempt to place critical research compounds in Schedule I.

Join us for an urgent and timely discussion about the ongoing legal battle to keep two vital research chemicals—DOI and DOC—accessible to scientists, featuring those on the front lines of the fight. This case represents the first substantive in-person hearing challenging psychedelic scheduling since MDMA in the 1980s

Why This Matters

Invented by the psychedelic godfather Alexander “Sasha” Shulgin, these compounds serve as essential tools in neuroscience, inflammation research, and psychedelic medicine development.

Their scheduling would:

  • Halt promising anti-inflammatory research discovered by the Nichols lab
  • Create substantial barriers for scientists studying serotonin systems
  • Set a dangerous precedent for restricting research tools
  • Further entrench drug war policies that hinder scientific advancement

Featured Speakers, all who were closely involved with the court case:

  • Hamilton Morris – Creator and director of Hamilton’s Pharmacopeia, journalist, documentarian, and scientific researcher
  • Robert Rush – Attorney with 19 years of experience, currently focused on psychedelics and plant medicine law
  • Alaina Jaster – Neuroscientist and host of the Psychedelic Brain Science podcast

Moderated by:

  • Gina Giorgio (SSDP Director of Strategy and Development)
  • Kat Murti (SSDP Executive Director)

What You’ll Learn

  • The scientific significance of DOI and DOC in current research
  • How the DEA’s scheduling attempt threatens scientific progress
  • The legal strategies being used to challenge scheduling
  • The broader pattern of regulatory decisions impacting research
  • Ways to support research freedom and scientific innovation

This collaborative educational webinar showcases the Shulgin Foundation’s scientific expertise alongside SSDP’s policy advocacy, highlighting the critical intersection of chemical innovation, research value, cognitive liberty, and drug policy reform.
