Has Meta Eased Cannabis Restrictions? Less Censorship on Instagram and Facebook, but No Clear Policies – El Planteo

SSDP’s call to end Meta censorship continues to get international attention. This time from El Planteo, an online publication based in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The publication informed readers that Meta is located in the US where 24 states have legal cannabis for adult use and 40 for medicine use. The publication turned to Kat Murit, SSDP’s Executive Director, for further insight into the issues that cannabis companies are facing with censorship and bans from Meta.

“They were closing off access to businesses that are fully compliant with local laws, but also to harm reduction groups that are working to save lives, drug education groups, and people working on policy change,” explained  Kat Murti , executive director of Students for Sensible Drug Policy.

The change in the search engine is welcome, but it doesn’t solve the structural problem: millions of people still can’t communicate, inform, or educate about cannabis without fear of being erased from the digital map.

As Kat Murti said : “People need to be able to connect. They need to be able to find information about how to save lives, how to get involved with their local governments, how to vote. And all of that is still being censored.”
